ABSTRACT

Organizations, agencies and services often exist independently of one another and have different missions, focuses, populations, and services. National organizations are often affiliated with international organizations addressing similar problems and concerns, thus forming a part of a global network of organizations focusing on a specific disability. Private sector organizations and agencies provide a major portion of the one-on-one direct services for disabled clients: counseling, vocational training, healthcare, personal care, transportation, information, support and assessment services, and caregiver support services are among the many provided to people with disabilities. On a national level, disability-specific organizations are dedicated to education and information, advocacy, and program development. The Association of Retarded Citizens of the United States works through education, research, and advocacy to improve the quality of life for children and adults with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their families.
