ABSTRACT

Disk mill gear cutters are broadely used in roughing and finishing external spur and helical gears. Milling a spur gear by the disk mill cutter in a universal milling machine is shown in this chapter. Worms and racks may also be cut by disk mill gear cutters as well. The use of disk-type milling cutters does not require the use of special gear cutting machines. The kinematics of the gear machining process when cutting a gear by a disk mill gear cutter is simple. In fact, it is one of the simplest among those shown for various types of gear machining process. Disk mill gear cutters can be used for machining of both symmetrical and asymmetrical tooth profiles. Standard mill cutters are designed for machining spur gears. When machining a helical gear by a mill gear cutter, an appropriate approximation of the helical gear tooth profile with the axial profile of the mill gear cutter is required.
