ABSTRACT

This chapter presents both large and small innovation successes in the private sector. It explores several other shorter stories of innovation success. The chapter provides a story of the amazing turnaround; a turnaround that was founded in an audacious challenge, innovation leadership, and commitment promulgated throughout the organization and its suppliers. It also provides a fascinating case study on innovation leadership. The most significant innovation is associated with the development of a highly advanced Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) scanner that shook the marketplace and established General Electric (GE) as the standard in the industry. The chapter explores several other shorter stories of innovation success. The success of the GE CAT endeavor gave the Milwaukee team the confidence to count on another breakthrough from the Schenectady team when magnetic resonance imaging was invented by two State University of New York professors.
