ABSTRACT

Forget everything you’ve learned (and taught employees) about bending at the knees and lifting with your legs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, back injuries account for one out of every five workplace injuries or illnesses. The American Chiropractic Association claims that 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time (American Chriopractic Association, n.d.). If you aren’t a statistics person, think about back injuries like this: how many people do you know who at some time have had back pain? How many people do you know who visit a doctor or chiropractor for back pain on a regular basis? How many have had surgery for their back pain? Most of the people you just thought about have been trained over and over again to bend at the knees and lift with their legs, yet they still had a back injury.
