ABSTRACT

This chapter explains both the basics of MIDI and how QLab utilizes it as an important component of its show control engine. MIDI has always been an essential component of QLab, both for its use in sound systems and for its show control capabilities. Roughly halfway up the settings list is a tab labelled MIDI. This serves the function of establishing the output patch for both MIDI Cues and MIDI File Cues. The settings tab is the primary control method for MIDI Cues. It is important to recognize that the MIDI Cue function contains three different MIDI Message types imbedded within its control architecture. One of the advantages of QLab is its ability to integrate with MIDI devices. There are no control parameters for the MIDI File Cue other than playback rate. One such powerful MIDI device is the Go Box, created by Team Sound, a New York-based sound technology company.
