ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a wealth of advice for teachers who want to encourage collaboration and team learning among students of all grade levels. The students take on increased responsibility for the learning and the class management. All teachers make choices about the classroom environment to be used each year and there are many fine options. The teacher has more freedom to mingle with the students and give extra time to teams of students who are struggling. Team members need to know what the objective is for the team. The goal could be to have the highest team average on a quiz or to be the team that improved the most from their last performance, or to achieve an agreed upon minimum score on a quiz, or to complete a team project. When students are pulled out of the rows and placed in groups where interaction is encouraged, the use of social skills will increase.
