ABSTRACT

Honest education praxis is a constant cycle of reflection, application and theorizing. As a mindful scholar practitioner who comes from a heritage of poverty and oppression and who has always worked outside the Academy, this chapter considers everyday practice and personal experience to be essential to authenticity, truth and agency in teaching and learning for equity. Education is about human development and the evolution of the species. These three things, survival, human development and the evolution of the species, make it impossible not to take the business of education very personally. All of education is a life-work experience. Every situation in life is an opportunity to analyze, criticize and alter social, economic, cultural, technological and psychological structures and phenomena that have features of oppression, domination, exploitation, injustice and misery. Learning to validate, share and honor the developments that emerge out of the realm of one's personal space is extremely important, especially for teachers.
