ABSTRACT

This chapter examines practical ways to connect with students, helps us to learn to implement relationship building into our curriculums and culture, and empowers students to be Upstanders. Some teachers don't seem to remember that the experience of emotional pain, fear, and anxiety are downright visceral. There's nothing wrong with purposeful classroom culture building with the premise that we can all learn from one another. Being the Upstander isn't easy, instantly rewarding, or fun. Instead, the reason we need to rise to the occasion is because the bullies will stop. Not all the time, for sure. But there is power in numbers.
