ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on who we are in terms of our primarily genetic or unconscious preferences and how we might manage them to be more effective. It also focuses on a few specific areas that are the preliminaries to becoming a more emotionally intelligent leader and towards understanding how leaders influence the desired organisational cultures. It is only through this kind of self-awareness that we can move away from our default Stone Age self and develop the behaviours that enable us to better manage our personality. Self-awareness has always been an important tenet of great leadership and is the first rung on the ladder of the journey. It seems clear that the need for it has increased rapidly as modern leaders look to better engage with the people around them and maximise the potential as well as the output of those they are responsible for. Sensation perceives objects as they are – realistically and concretely.
