ABSTRACT

Emotions are amazing things. The most important point about emotions is they are initiated outside our conscious control. They just happen! There is nothing we can do to stop that. Each emotion contains information, energy and influence. The word "emotion" comes from the Latin "emovere". Fear is the most important and destructive emotion for a leader to understand. In today's world it is usually not about being attacked or killed as it would have been perceived by our ancestors. Emotions are generated in the amygdala, which is the limbic part of the brain that first emerged in early mammals so as far as we know emotions are a mammalian construct. The essence of managing our emotions effectively is to make sure they don't hijack us so that we don't behave in a way that in hindsight we would have preferred not to.
