ABSTRACT

After over 25 years, emotional intelligence (EI) is finally becoming mainstream. Not only have many books been written on the subject but we now quite regularly hear the term on the radio, on Television and in films. This is great news because EI is so important in learning to manage our emotions and thus improve our own self-management and relationship building. EI was defined by Salovey and Mayer in 1990 as "the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions". Emotional Self-Control being a key strength is a double-edged sword. The fact that others saw our leaders controlling their emotions often means that they are good at ignoring or hiding their emotions rather than actively managing them in a positive way.
