ABSTRACT

This chapter provides details of six leadership styles that specifically relate to emotional intelligence. The six styles are described in detail with information about when to use each style, which other styles they work well with, the potential weaknesses or each style, the impact they have, the key emotional intelligence (EI) capabilities that are associated with each style and other observations about each style. The problem is that both Commanding and Pace-Setting styles generally have a negative impact on the climate, culture and long-term performance of an organisation because they are treating people as units of production. The Affiliative style is useful across the board as a team builder and supports all other styles. Any kind of team activity can achieve this from meetings and workshops to promote dialogue, to team activities that have nothing directly to do with the business of the organisation.
