ABSTRACT

Studies of self-suggestion and its application began to appear in scientific literature in the middle of the 19th century. Individual elements of self-suggestion were used by primitive peoples, often as part of various rituals. The development of the study of self-suggestion can be divided into two stages: prescientific and scientific. Attempts to approach suggestion and self-suggestion scientifically appear in the mid-19th century. Most important were the development of the teaching of hypnosis and study of hysteria. Self-suggestion methods began to take definite shape in the '30s and '40s of the 20th century, and have been considerably developed in contemporary research and works. Contemporary development of studies of the principles of cerebral organization and structures and their interrelationship with the environment and corresponding achievements in neurophysiology all open new vistas in understanding psychophysiological processes and hold great significance for evaluating certain phenomena of self-suggestion.
