ABSTRACT

The most complete description of self-suggestion methods can be found in the Indian philosophical system of yoga. Certain methods of self-suggestion have been used for religious purposes by some Christian adepts. Methods for teaching voluntary regulation of heart activity, which is presumed to "unite them with God," have been described in detail. The basis for the formation of contemporary methods of self-suggestion was laid in the middle of the 19th century, beginning with the development of the teaching of suggestion. In P. Levy's method, emphasis was placed on teaching the student to master the ability to use self-suggestion independently, whereas conviction and suggestion by the teacher played the major role in E. Coue's method. Directed self-suggestion appears in the course of study in the form of mantras combined with specific exercises. Usually the mantras are verses with a given content.
