ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to comprehensively map the area of comparative communication research by using different data sources. Qualitative and quantitative methods in comparative research were compared in different academic disciplines. The history of doing comparative communication research may date back to many decades, but the effort to summarize and rethink the orientation and strategies has a shorter life span. The cited references from the 147 documents reveal the most cited authors, the journal publication venues, the specific fields related to comparative communication research, and the network of relationships among the more cited scholars. The most cited documents identified can help people to understand the core literature that has been generated. From the 147 sampled documents, the chapter reviews that there are quite a number of review articles on comparative communication research. Earlier studies by Jay Blumler and Michael Gurevitch focused mainly on comparative political communication research.
