ABSTRACT

In academia, interdisciplinarity has become a watchword for many individuals, groups and institutions internationally. It is so well established that the features of interdisciplinary discourse(s) have themselves become the focus of investigation. This chapter focuses on specific interdisciplinary ventures in linguistics, namely those where insights from a particular kind of linguistic research is integrated with research from disciplines other than linguistics. The core 'discipline' focused on throughout the chapter is therefore linguistics, not corpus linguistics or corpus-assisted discourse studies. This chapter discusses three a priori kinds of interdisciplinary approaches in corpus linguistic research. First, there are instances when corpus linguistic research informs or is informed by research carried out in other disciplines. Second, there are instances where corpus linguisti cs informs endeavours by individuals, groups and institutions outside of academia to gain insights into issues or situations they are interested in. Third, there is research where corpus linguistics is used in synergy with other disciplines.
