ABSTRACT

In this chapter, readers learn how to evaluate and design surveys for use in their own practice. After beginning with an introduction to survey design, readers learn about when to design surveys and appropriate research questions for survey design. A thorough discussion of important steps in survey design is included. Sections to consider in survey design include determining what to measure, generating an item pool, determining measurement format, validation items, administering to a developmental sample and evaluating, and optimizing scale length. Content specific to important steps in survey design is illustrated by an ongoing case vignette of a practitioner who develops a survey for her own practice.
