ABSTRACT

As gender permeates every aspect of our life and retains its global significance, research in this field should continue to grow. In this Introduction, we argue that more attention should be paid to the areas of sport and exercise where gender dichotomies are still extant and where those binaries are still often presented as ‘natural and fixed’. Although Western-based research has paid attention to gender divides and imbalances, specific geographic areas have not been given in-depth academic attention. Therefore, after providing a brief synopsis of the chapters included in this volume, we highlight the need for further exploration of non-Western cultures and societies in the global South in relation to gender, sport and exercise. We also argue that such research would need to grow out of the knowledges and experiences of indigenous and local peoples and entail dialogue between diverse epistemologies and methodologies.
