ABSTRACT

This study sought to gather consensus from sports practitioners regarding strategies that could be employed to improve women’s sports in Solomon Islands. Utilising the nominal group technique, 16 participants underwent a half-day workshop and discussed the salience of changing mind-sets by breaking cultural and religious beliefs around women’s position in society. A key part of the workshop discussion was the need to develop feasible strategic plans at government level to provide an enabling environment for the creation of ample opportunities for women to participate in sports at all levels. This includes increased numbers of women in major sport leadership roles such as coaching, technical officials and administrators. However, successfully implementing such strategies across the country will require the breaking of multiple, entrenched cultural barriers.
