ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the complex arrangements of people, machines, and other components the LiveJournal vidding community used to distribute their film and television fan videos, showing how these arrangements can be understood in terms of the theoretical concepts of Assemblage Theory and Actor-Network Theory. It focuses on analysing the various processes these components and the assemblages that included them underwent as part of the community's distribution activities and shows that the community members were struggling against processes that threatened to destabilize their assemblages. Based on the 2011/12 fieldwork, the chapter examines the primarily human and machine components that made up the assemblages constructed to distribute these videos. It begins with an analysis of LiveJournal, the journaling platform that was central to the community's activities during this period. Based on the 2016/17 fieldwork, the chapter explores how the community had undergone significant changes since 2011/12 due to the ongoing destabilization processes that they faced.
