ABSTRACT

Working class life in Selton Town is characterized by the essentially public and vulnerable nature of high density tenement living. Life in Selton Town consists of dense and highly localized networks of relationships. The public nature of life in Selton Town is evident not only in the appearance of dwellings, but also in the organization of domestic life. The houses which line Selton Town's major thoroughfares are of traditional Jamaican design. The most common form of accommodation in Selton Town is an apartment, part of a larger house. The public nature of life in Selton Town is evident not only in the appearance of dwellings, but also in the organization of domestic life. For women and young people who remain in the yard there are standard daily chores to be done, always to the accompaniment of the radio. The evening meal consists of a staple, generally rice, dumplings and green bananas, yam, coco, dasheen and occasionally cassava.
