ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the perspective of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT+) activists who, for varying reasons, did not wholeheartedly endorse the fight for marriage. Some activists consider LGBT+ movement anathema to the goals of sexual liberation associated with queer resistance. Anti-marriage sentiment within the LGBT+ movement can take a variety of forms, but in general, arguments suggest that marriage is problematic for the gay community from cultural, political, and ethical perspectives. On the cultural level, adopting marriage rights as a movement priority symbolically represents the acceptance of traditional heteronormative family structures and the rejection of distinctively queer family forms. In spite of the multiple pockets of marriage skeptics within the LGBT+ movement, the general public has likely remained unaware of the depth of the intra-movement division. A smaller number publicly opposed gay marriage, taking a stand as defenders of traditional marriage and appealing to faith-based consumers.
