ABSTRACT

The meaning of an active and engaged manager is "a manager that does not allow undesirable situations to remain within the organization". However, most managers have a tendency to not tackle issues and allow adverse situations to remain too long within the workplace. The problem with this is that most often, these situations are things people can deal with and change. In western English cultures, people often talk about the concept of the "Elephant in the Room"—the issue that everyone knows about but no one wants to talk about or deal with. One of the key tenets of the Toyota System is the spirit of challenge. This is a key element that demands everyone to commit to the idea of breaking through issues and business goals in order to move forward together. Waste needs to be addressed in order to be a proper steward of resources. This is difficult, but managers need to address these issues using common approaches.
