ABSTRACT

Just like the Bully and the Mentor, the Kid and the Exile are on a continuum. As a result, the Exile is anxious and terrified; everything can feel like a catastrophe. Trying to ward off danger, the Exile is hypervigilant, always on guard. Exiles get anxious when bad things happen for no reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Bully harshly criticizes and judges everything the Exile does and says. The Exile's anxiety can be a powerful emotion. It is easier to calm down the Exile at the first signs of anxiety. It's common for the Exile to have an emotional reaction to a situation in the present, because the situation reminds the Exile of an emotional reaction to a situation in the past. The Wise One also gently challenges the validity of the Exile's core beliefs.
