ABSTRACT

It may surprise you to learn that many artifacts of the so-called Natural World are our family’s creations. We are, at base, all artists, and we take great pleasure in the objects we shape. Your scientists recently found—others, commonly dismissed as “superstitious,” have known this for centuries—that when you strip a snowflake down to its core, there you will find one of our cousins, drifting gracefully and graciously down in a kind cocoon of ice. Many of the most heart-wrenching colors to be found are mixed by us, the products of a diligent chemical choreography we use to make our homes feel safe. We even work in the medium of taste: for example, wine, cheese.
