ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the institutional characteristics of the university and the professional association of faculty that can precipitate and harbor the bully and support the bully culture. In fact, with an engrained bully culture the organization becomes the bully. Faculty and staff in toxic institutions suffer from persistent abuse. The institution-as-bully or vicarious bullying represents the depersonalized face of bullying. The focus shifts to become communication-based and task-related rather than just person-specific bullying. Bullies and organizations also experience agency locus when they avoid taking responsibility or accepting accountability for their negative action or complacent inaction. Department cultures and climates dictate the norms, values, and characteristics of a singular unit. Climate entails faculty's shared perceptions of the departmental environment. Professional association meetings bring faculty together and also socialize them and the mentees they shepherd to these academic conferences.
