ABSTRACT

Solutions, remedies, and interventions to combat workplace bullying appear plentiful but implementation may not be easy, quick, or necessarily effective. Following the careful consideration of people, place, and context, the targeted faculty, bystanders/witnesses, academic administrators, HR professionals, and others on campus can select from the extensive list below and adapt to an institution's specific circumstances in order to address incivility and bullying in higher education. No matter what the situation, targets need to develop coping strategies to manage their circumstances and the effects on their personality, health, and well-being. Because bullying affects not only the target but also relationships in the department, targets must not only find ways to heal personally, but also maintain a strong social, collegial, and interpersonal presence in the department. Bullies try to marginalize, discredit, or ostracize targets. Cyberbullying through electronic communication and social media continues to gain ground as an impersonal and often anonymous means to attack colleagues.
