- Perspectives on the Translational Aspects of Articular Cartilage Biology

In the foregoing chapters, we have discussed articular cartilage morphology (Chapter 1), developmental biology and signaling (Chapter 2), pathology (Chapter 3), tissue engineering (Chapter 4), and methods for examining tissue quality (Chapter 5). With this background, we can now consider the challenges and opportunities in the future of articular cartilage biology and therapies. Notable gaps remain in certain specific areas that need to be addressed in order to make inroads into translational aspects of articular cartilage biology. What directions should new therapies take, and how can they be validated and translated to clinical use?
