ABSTRACT

This chapter presents information or guidance regarding ear, nose and throat for use by medical, scientific or health-care professionals. "Dizziness" can mean different things to different people – it is important to clarify early on exactly what the patient means by the term. Vertigo is the sensation that the patient or the room they are in is spinning, often coupled with nausea and nystagmus. Feelings of dizziness can also be of psychiatric origin. Lymphadenopathy refers to nodes that are abnormal in size, consistency or number and can be either "localised" or "generalised" if more than one group is affected. Sore throat is common in younger individuals, but in older individuals you should always consider whether or not there could be an underlying malignancy. Sore throat can be caused by reflux. Throat clearing, acid brash and a previous history of reflux are common features.
