ABSTRACT

The green revolution came about through the application of science and technology to the problems of poverty and food shortages in the developing world. According to Dixon (1990) it was characterized by:

1. a breakthrough in plant breeding that produced high yielding food grains; 2. a package of technology, including fertilizer, insecticide, implements, water

control and high yield seed varieties; 3. an agricultural development strategy in which the application of technology to

developing world agriculture is central to solving the problem of increasing food production.
