ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of the selection of study wetlands, highlighting a typology of wetlands which was produced from the classification process described in the previous chapter. In addition, a model of wetland development is proposed on the basis of the occurrence of wetlands in Illubabor under a range of different land uses. The general hydrological and land use characteristics of the study wetlands are also presented using information elicited from local community members throughout the course of the PRA research programme. This is supplemented by information recorded during other field visits to the study area and by information compiled from other recent research projects, notably the Ethiopian Wetlands Research Programme (EWRP). Following this, the characteristics of each study wetland are discussed, providing a context for the discussion of the research findings in Chapters Eight and Nine.
