ABSTRACT

Yogyakarta Special Region, henceforth referred to as DIY, is one of the twenty-seven Indonesian Provinces, stretching along the Indian Ocean on the south coast of Java Island. It is the smallest Province of Indonesia. The Special Region's Districts are sharply contrasted in terms of climate, soils, physiographic configuration, and hydrology. Contrasting with other areas of Monsoon Asia, rivers in the DIY are not navigable and therefore are not used for transportation. On the other hand, they are used extensively for irrigation purposes. Numerous small rivers run from mountain ridges. These small rivers flow into three main rivers, namely: the Progo, Opak and Serang rivers. In turn, the latter run into the Indian Ocean. The per-capita production of rice is much higher than in Gunung Kidul District and a large part of the rice production is grown in a wetland piedmont plain located between the foothills of the Menoreh mountain range and the Progo River in the northeast of the District.
