ABSTRACT

The village of Kembang is remarkable for its geographical setting, being located on the western bank of the Progo River on the piedmont plain next to the Menoreh range. Most of the area occupied by this community lies on flat irrigated land, albeit part of the agricultural land located alongside the westernmost fringes encroaches upon sloping terrain in the vicinity of the Menoreh range. Farmers cultivate wet rice on the flat irrigated land of Kembang in the same way as farmers do in most lowland communities. This study of the community of Putat II suggests that given the paucity of locally-based productive activities, a possible local development policy may consist in raising the chances of Putat II's villagers to gain access to regional employment opportunities, including those which are located at a commuting distance. The magnitude of changes brought about in the hamlet of Putat II by improved communications.
