ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the preceding chapters of this book. The primary concern of the book is to question the role of news as part of the changing climate and to analyse the impact of news on the politics of peace. It highlights the important contributions for understanding the role of news in the Northern Ireland conflict. A tendency for the news media to maintain short-sighted stereotypes about particular groupings in the Northern Ireland peace process, Unionist as well as Republican has not helped to facilitate the development of peace. Though studies of the media's role within the conflict of Northern Ireland provide valuable historical material, they do not recognise the possibility of change in the political climate, and so they do not bring into view the possibility that reporting can shift from supporting to obstructing dominant political discourse.
