ABSTRACT

In this talk, Allan Luke introduces a four-part paradigm (coding practices, pragmatic practices, text-meaning practices, and critical practices) model for reading that encourages different levels of critical literacy. His talk addresses the model, school level, and the systemic and school reform regimes. He introduces and reviews the four resources comprising this model, and what they attempt to do. He then addresses his current and previous work in Ontario and Queensland, particularly how these states or jurisdictions have developed alternatives to mandated scripted reading pedagogy. The four resources model is presented as an organizing principle for whole school literacy plans.
