ABSTRACT

Progressive teachers struggle to recognize and to enact potential roles for reading in people's processes of developing dispositions and capabilities necessary to engage justice and democracy as ways of living. In a traditional writing workshop, there is a share time, or author's chair that students anticipate and prepare for…. With online writing, choosing to share or not share is really out of the hands of the writer. The moment the students pushed "save" or "upload", their writing was available for anyone and everyone to see. Thus the online writing workshop generated strategies for controlling one's own text. The lessons have an authentic context in which curriculum emerges through conversation driven by the experiences and expectations of the students – even very young students. Charging that traditional schooling, child-centered approaches, and scientific management contributed to social inequalities among groups, social reconstructionists sought to enlist teachers in remaking the institutions of American democracy.
