ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the main features of theory of modal dynamics of human learning. It has been thought that the most peculiar feature of the human species in relation to other animal species is that the development of a human being requires a lot of learning, teaching and education. The chapter analyses the presumed humanisation process from the perspective of modal dynamics. It describes the three levels of Bildung, including pragmatic learning, social learning and existential learning. From around the eighteenth century, many German language thinkers began to use the term Bildung to refer to the learning and growth of individual members in society, but also to the cultural and political development of the society through the activity of these members. Humanity, as an abstract idea or feature, defining the (educated) human being and the goal of Bildung, could be made more concrete in the term 'human action': how human beings act or how they are thought to be acting.
