ABSTRACT

This chapter takes Split Vision Urbanism LA, the motion graphics art installation and design research project, as an object of study to reflect upon the use of visual and textual methods in interdisciplinary design research. The chapter argues that the suburban plot configuration, which is prescribed through single-family residential zoning, suppresses creative opportunities, and that research incentives that can detect and elucidate the generative aspects of suburban space are needed. The chapter draws on theoretical inquiries and design research to postulate a critique of the preconceived plot configuration in suburbia, and to identify methods that can be used when combining multiple disciplines and techniques in academic research. The purpose of the chapter is to extrapolate the scholarly context of the theories and methods by which the design research project was guided. The chapter addresses academics in art and design related disciplines, as well as innovative practices concerned with the generative aspects of suburban development.
