ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an exploration of the application of a person-centred Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) approach with nonverbal clients in a group context. Integrating DMP with the person-centred approach allows for an environment in which the person with the most profound learning difficulty has the space to grow and become a valued member of health professionals' community. For this to be fully established and embodied by the DMP, to create a non-judgemental environment in which they can all flourish must be a desire that resonates professionally and personally. The chapter refers to the dancers professionals work with as 'adults with learning difficulties'; this descriptor immediately places people in a category and under a label and evokes a particular picture of how this group of dancers might appear. It introduces George's world. His story and identity is an amalgamation of information, observations and experiences gathered from the variety of clients professionals have danced with over many years of practice.
