ABSTRACT

The history of mankind can be regarded as a history of migration. Labour mobility has been an important and essential feature of the economic and social development of societies throughout history. Despite this fact, migration is at present the cause of rising tension worldwide. The substantial increase in the pressure to migrate during the last two decades and the dramatic rise in the number of refugees and asylum seekers are two of the reasons for this. Consequently, there are uneasy and sometimes hostile feelings in sections of the population about migration and migrants.
