Introduction

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part suggests that, in a global perspective, the religions offer fundamental values that the human community needs for the next phase of its evolution – and that the encounter, clash and negotiation between them is best handled in the spirit and framework of dialogical relationships. It examines the tensions and opportunities inherent in an interconnected world in relation to a rapidly changing Europe. Having been plagued by wars of religion, Europe might be thought to be the least likely candidate for showing how religious values might apply fruitfully for the future in dialogical ways. But as a test case at a geopolitical regional level, the emerging issues might well apply beyond the confines of Europe itself. The part draws some threads together by focusing directly on the positive potential of dialogue between religions, civilizations and world-views.
