ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates change following migration in the Zapotec community of San Juan Evangelista Analco, exploring how shifts in demographics and culture are reconfiguring two central tenets of community life. First, in the context of an expanded social field, migration has prompted the community to reconsider its terms of membership, and adapt an age-old system of communal service expectations that migrants struggle to adhere to. Second, it provides an example of a migrant-sending community considering how best to use its territorial commons within a context of agricultural abandonment and forest regeneration.
