ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to outline the impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on advanced logistics and supply chain management (SCM). It focuses on the contribution made by ICT to the improvement of the overall efficiency in the logistics chain, through their greater integration and the effects on transport and logistics service providers. One of the chief areas of interest that has emerged in recent years concerns the effects of new ICT applied to logistics and SCM. Examination of the impact of ICT on the operations planning of the supply chain has highlighted the fact that such technologies have become a determining factor for each firm intending to manage an integrated supply chain. The literature and cases have highlighted how the main international transport and logistics service companies are redefining their respective roles and business processes through the use of ICT. The transport and logistics industry in Italy provides a different picture altogether.
