ABSTRACT

Like any other system, land use systems are characterised by input, throughput, output, and feedback. Land, 'the basic natural resource' (Mather, 1986, p.l), is the stage of human activities, where raw materials are mined and transformed, and where waste is dumped. Mining and dumping are the two key operations at either end of the production chain, and both occur on legal and on unauthorised sites. Both are also a mirror of man's attitude towards land.
