ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the effort to enhance madrasah education in Singapore. This effort primarily aims to enable madrasahs in Singapore to nurture students to become religious scholars and teachers that are future-ready and able to serve in modern and technology-driven Singapore. The Joint Madrasah System (JMS) enabled madrasahs to harness their strength on the specific educational level while allowing respective madrasah to preserve their history, vision and mission. An integrated curriculum has always appealed to the imagination of the Muslim community as they believe that they are expected to excel in this world and the hereafter and that they are to seek knowledge from cradle to grave. Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) was an opportunity to develop capabilities in areas of curriculum development and its attendant activities, within the madrasah sector. Eleven teachers from the participating madrasahs were seconded to MUIS to develop the content of the respective subject groupings.
