ABSTRACT

This chapter details the specific theoretical frameworks and methodical approaches to develop the analytic approach that is used to analyze picture books about slavery. Specifically, this analytic approach is informed by critical race theory (CRT), critical race feminism (CRF), critical multicultural analysis (CMA), and intertextuality. The analytic approach used to examine the picture books about slavery draws upon some of the tenets associated with CRT or, more specifically, critical race methodology (CRM). The chapter explores how CMA expands upon the theoretical framing that has been used to develop the analytic approach. It includes a description of the analytic techniques that are used to analyze the illustrations that appear in the featured picture books. The chapter also explores how children's literature about slavery remains a site where the struggle to reject, counter, and sometimes recast racist stereotypes about Black slaves takes place.
