ABSTRACT

Sport, as a microcosm of society, helps reveal attitudes regarding race relations in the United States. This chapter explores racial discrimination in sport, with particular focus on African-Americans, and examines the role that sport has sometimes played in society promoting racial equality. From an ethical standpoint, it considers why a certain group of people (African-American) have not always been given the same opportunities as another group of people (Caucasian) within the framework of sport. Athletes, like other popular public figures such as actors and politicians, can influence public opinion on prominent topics and issues. Athletes often use their reputations and public recognition to highlight these topics and issues, including the racial divisions in the United States or the world. Collegiate and professional athletes of all races, ethnicities and of both genders are capable of piercing through the public consciousness on matters of public concern and opinion, and can impact the national discussion in ways that ordinary citizens cannot.
