ABSTRACT

An increasing number of women want to be directors—of historical societies, of museums, city and municipal museums, science centres, the whole range of cultural institutions. For young women at the start of their museum careers, their passion for a museum's impact and their desire to see it replicated is unbounded. Young women are concerned that the educational and experience requirements many museums demand are too high, making it difficult to get that first great job, and adding to their school debt load. Apart from lengthy job searches, most of the women have already firmly internalized the gendered nuances of museum disciplines, job titles, and collections. Though today's emerging professionals stand on the shoulders of a century of museum women, they are also the beneficiaries of all the problems left unsolved. The authors believe that young women will make a real difference in the diversity, equity, and inclusivity spectrum.
