ABSTRACT

Focused on the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, success is evidenced most clearly through the orchestra's financial performance and artistic programming. Founded in 1895, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is the sixth oldest orchestra in the United States. The city of Cincinnati was founded in 1788 along the Ohio River and grew steadily during the eighteenth century. Indeed, Cincinnati continues to serve as the headquarters for a number of large corporations, most notably Proctor & Gamble, which has been headquartered in Cincinnati since 1837. When Trey Devey arrived at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for his first day on January 6, 2009, the orchestra's new president knew what he was getting into – at least in broad strokes. The orchestra's most high profile financial success was the completion of a quiet fundraising campaign that resulted in the addition of $26 million to their endowment.
