ABSTRACT

As we have described earlier, our research was focused around three particular areas where different forms of the ‘youth nuisance’ phenomenon had been identified and appeared to be causing some residential and inter-agency concerns. In addition to surveying the relevant age groups of young people resident in and around these areas through the schools they attended and contacting the young people themselves, directly, whilst they were congregating, ‘hanging around’ or attending local youth clubs, we also set out to survey the adult residents living adjacent to the alleged ‘trouble spots’ and/or the locations where the young people assembled. As it turned out, the ‘congregating’ of the young people in question was not a static activity and our brief included the idea of tracking this activity and making appropriate contact with residents in the locations wherever it occurred. In the event our three areas turned into five - or, more strictly, three main areas and two additional ones.
